Bern awaited Luke's response, all the while still feeling a bit shaky after all that had happened. It was uncomfortable, not knowing where he was, or what might happen next. He only hoped that he would have enough time for peace to get Luke into the game and safe from the meteors. Come to think of it, the strange sprite-like thing that had more or less turned into a floating head of Bob Barker had disappeared... He hadn't seen it since before he'd had that moment of panic. Where had it gone? Oh, it probably didn't matter...
Luke's reply showed up, and he hurriedly addressed the problem by picking up the couch, and dropping it on the lid of the cruxtruder. However, instead of letting it fall to the ground, he employed the quickest reflexes he could manage, and caught it before it fell and broke apart. Nice save! Setting it down where it had been, he deployed the pre-punched card as well, setting it down for Luke. That was all he could do, right? The sprite thing had appeared for him as well, and the cruxite dowel. At least everything was working out... Now it was up to Luke. He could see with a quick zoom-out that the meteor wasn't too far off, but he would have time.
~~~~~
Rhys didn't need to be told twice. It was her turn to do this, and she didn't want to screw up, either. At least that goal kept her focused. She put in the client disk, then waited for Alex to give her what she needed to get started.
In the meantime, she recalled that they would need something heavy to get the cruxtruder open. Surely there was something perfect in the shop! It might have confused Alex, but she dashed off into the room which led to the shop, searching through the odds and ends, most of which were placed as though they were part of a display, but still cluttered, like an over-wrought corner shop, and managed to dig out... a huge geode! She knew it was a geode. An enormous one, in fact! It weighed a whole lot, and was about the size of her open hand... basically, like a freaking bowling ball. Though she was surprised by the captchalogue system as she picked it up; the shock of suddenly seeing it 'go into her inventory' causing her to squeak in alarm. But Bern had talked about this, hadn't he? How you could pick things up and store them just like this, and take them out later? Well, it was kind of nice not having to carry that thing around!
When the window with the image of Rhys's room opened up for Alex, she... well, she was about to start setting Rhys up, but she needed to check back on what she needed to do... the recent terror had temporarily shaken those memories from her mind.
She scrolled up through the memo and re-read what Leta, Wess, Luke, and Bern had written, then went back to Rhys's window and carefully set up. Only the totem lathe would fit in her room, so she placed the cruxtruder in her living room, and then the alchemiter in what looked like some kind of shop. The card she put next to the totem lathe, back in her room again.
When Rhys got back to the room, a few seconds later, a huge machine was deployed there. Hey, that looked like one of the ones she'd put in Alex's room. But there wasn't any more room in here, so she supposed that Alex had put the other machines elsewhere. Anyway, this didn't look like the one that she needed right now... She went back out to the shop, and saw another machine there. Well, that didn't look like the one either; the one she needed to find was the one with the cap on it... Yes, perhaps it was through the other door? She left the shop area and took the other door to her room, which was a hallway down to the main house. (Her room could be said to be the storage room for the shop, due to its location... but that worked out just fine, since her mom made her tend to the shop.) And there, lo and behold, in the living room was the machine she'd been looking for!
Alex wasn't going to need to move any of her things to break open the cruxtruder... Rhys had already planned for that! She took out the geode she'd picked up earlier and threw it at the cruxtruder's lid with all her might (and it wasn't like she was all that weak or anything!). If it could handle heavy shit being dropped on it like beds, then surely the geode would serve the same purpose... Sure enough, the lid popped off, and the cruxite dowel was released along with the weird spritey thing she'd seen on Alex's screen. What even was that thing? Well, it wasn't exactly causing any problems... so she took the cruxite dowel to the totem lathe, and set it there. Oh wait, she needed something, didn't she?
Oh, there it was, sitting right next to it. Alex was so thoughtful! She inserted the card into the machine, hoping that she put it in the right way... Would it even matter if it was backwards or upside down? Hopefully not...
The machine set to carving the dowel into an unusual shape, and when it finished, Rhys took it down from the platform, hugging it close to her chest. She didn't know why, but she wanted to hug it. Right now, it was her favorite thing, because it was going to save her life, right? The best weird carved dowel thing EVER.
SS: Wess are you okay? SS: I deployed it next to SS: It's used machine.
Alright, that was pretty embarrassing... Wess was pretty sure the card hadn't been there, but he definitely wasn't in a reasonable state of mind, so it was very possible he'd just missed it.
Without responding to her message, Wess moved off again to get himself (and his mother, hopefully) into the game.
The card was actually incredibly easy to find, which brought a rosy color to his cheeks... but he picked it up, and put it into the totem lathe where it needed to go. A moment later, he had the expected... weird, squiggly vase-looking thing... he'd seen most of these things while Leta had done them, through his screen, but this was... this was vastly different. He was trying to ignore all of this strangeness at the moment, though. He had other things to worry about, so many other things.
And he was, unfortunately, worrying about all of them now. His mind was buzzing with thought, worry, and panic, and he was having trouble keeping his usual tight hold on his emotions. Tears were welling up in his eyes, and after he got the carved cruxite dowel in his hands, Wess paused to wipe them. It was frustrating, really. It was incredibly frustrating, especially since he didn't even have time for it! He wasn't moving anywhere, though; he needed to take a moment to breath. So, struggling not to look at the timer on the cruxtruder, Wess set his dowel down at his feet and took his glasses off and his handkerchief out of his pocket, his hands shaking as he cleaned the lenses.
When he put them back on, though, he couldn't help a glance at the timer.
Luke watched as his couch levitated off the ground and over the cruxtruder. It dropped, knocking the lid off and revealing the dowel and glowing orb that he had seen; however, his seemed to be a different color. He expected the couch to fall to the floor and break apart, but it stopped in midair with green text that read " Nice Save!" around it. ...Ignoring how weird but also awesome that was, he scooped up the dowel and pre-punched card on his way to the Totem Lathe, inserting both into their appropriate slots. As the Lathe carved the dowel, the stress of the moment caught up to him. He hadn't had time to feel worried earlier, but it was all suddenly rushing to him at once. He began clutching his stomach as a wave of sickness overtook him. He reminded himself that he had no time to feel worried, and that he could spend as much time as he needed taking it all in once he arrived wherever he was supposed to be getting to. The Lathe finished its job and released its hold on the dowel. It's new shape was vastly different from what he had seen Bern create, but he decided to simply go along with it. He picked up the dowel, and took it over to the Alchemiter. ~~~ As Wess and Luke has been working, neither of them had realized what was happening outside their timed think tanks. The volcanoes, long dormant and thought to be extinct, suddenly became volatile through seemingly no provocation. Simultaneously, both erupted, violently shaking the land around them. The rumbling rattled their towers, making it nearly impossible to stand up. ~~~ Suddenly, Gammalth phased in front of Rhys. With one violent jerk of his head, he knocked the dowel out of her arms, causing it to bounce onto the circular platform in the center of her room. In a flash, it was gone, transported all they way down to the bottom floor of her house. ~~~ The ground unexpectedly shook underneath Luke's feet, followed by the sound of an explosion. He fell on his side, accidentally throwing the dowel away from him in the process. As he shielded himself from falling debris, he could see a flash of light emanating from the center of his room. He cursed to himself, as he knew the dowel was now on the bottom floor of his tower, where the only other functioning teleporter was. Once the shaking had decayed enough for him to stand up, he quickly ran to the window to see what the cause of the earthquake was. To his dismay, he saw that the volcano he thought was extinct had erupted. He saw debris flying from the volcano, and lava spilling from the top and out of various cracks. He quickly added that to his mental list of "Impending Dooms to Avoid At All Costs". He dashed over to the teleporter in the center of his room and stood in its center, beaming himself down to the bottom floor.
Wess was actually half a step into getting moving again when the earth started rolling beneath him, which made him lose his balance and fall rather ungracefully to the floor. Amidst a fresh wave of confusion and panic, he didn't really think to get to the doorway or corner countless safety announcements had deemed safe, but rather curled himself into a ball on the floor and dug his fingers into the carpet, clinging to the floor like it was the only thing that could protect him from a fast-approaching demise. If the idea of him losing his friends, his home, his mother, and his life to meteors hadn't been enough, and the idea of losing the later three to his suddenly fiery island added to that hadn't made it enough, and the pressure of him being the only one capable of preventing quite a few of these things but in a very short amount of time hadn't taken that immense pile of stress and emotions and used it to shove him right off the edge, this certainly was. He had barely over a minute to get him and his mother into this game and save both of their lives now, and this damned earthquake was about to prevent him from doing that! He was going to die, his mother was going to die, and what if Leta still needed him?!
Feeling shaky and angry and vaguely nauseous, Wess began trying very, very hard to pull himself to his feet on the unsteady ground so he could get moving again, despite the earthquake.
The cruxite dowel, freed from the shackles of gravity and a perfectly still ground, bounced and rolled away from Wess. It took a moment, but chance managed to push it down the hall Leta had created, and from there it found the transportalizer pad in a far corner of Wess's room and disappeared.
Rhys had just resolved to do something that wasn't wasting time... when suddenly, her goat friend appeared! And she barely had the time to register that it was in fact her goat friend before he had knocked the totem out of her arms. What?! No! Why would Curly McHorns betray her like this?! She needed that thing so she could live!
Come to think of it, she hadn't thought much before about the fact that her goat friend could teleport around, and no other animals really had that kind of ability. Though that was probably due to the fact that she had to deal with so much weird and paranormal shit anyway, thanks to her mom. And it wasn't like she hadn't had her own set of weird experiences that didn't involve Gammalth. She had her own strange ability to see things that she didn't figure other people saw. Maybe she just hadn't thought much of it. Maybe she subconsciously understood that it was nothing to be bothered by, so she didn't think it odd. This, however, was plenty odd. There was no reason why he would just appear and do that!
"That's a naughty goat!" she scolded, but she didn't bother with him long... she needed to get the totem back! Running toward the transportalizer didn't help her much; she ended up banging her foot on the corner of her bed. Being that she wasn't wearing any shoes, like usual, it hurt like a motherfucker. But she gathered herself up and limped onto the transportalizer anyway, transporting down and going after the totem as best she could...
A brief flash of light enveloped Luke, and he was whisked away to the lowest floor of his tower. There were a variety of strange machines down here, most of which performed questionable or menial actions. He didn't enjoy being there...something about it gave off an air of adversity. He looked around hurriedly for the dowel and found it on the other side of the room near the super-duper-magical-transporty-table-thingy. He didn't remember the name of it, but he was quite sure that name was a far better match for the machine than it's original title. Luke quickly ran over to the dowel, picked it up, and started back towards the teleporter pad, when... *SHHCK*...a handle jutted out from the ground, right in front of Luke's foot. His foot caught on the metal handle, and the dowel went flying again. It whacked into a large metal plate on the front of one of the machines, causing it to drop into a funnel that seemed oddly the exact size of the carved dowel... It fell onto a metal track, sending the dowel rolling down towards another machine that then proceeded to pick it up with a metal claw. The machine dropped it into a cannon that launched it across the room to another machine that caught the dowel in a net, causing it to roll onto a conveyor belt. Luke got up, panicking that this crazy machine might be the cause of his death. This series of Rube Goldberg-esque machine activities continued until a hand-shaped machine grabbed the dowel in midair, placed it directly on the magical-transporty-table, pressed a few buttons, and waved as the dowel vanished from sight. Luke broke down and let out a VERY audible scream as the dowel disappeared. His only chance of salvation, gone from this plane of existence for all he knew. Anger boiled within him, but he couldn't figure out who or what to direct it at. This machine? The teleporters? The game? Himself? He wasn't sure, but at the moment, he held great contempt for ALL of those things. He sat there writhing for a few minutes when another flash of light emanated from the teleporter-table-thingy, and he felt something hit him right in the head. ~~~ Gammalth blinked into the room just after Rhys and began fooling around with the dowel again. He began knocking it around the room with his horns, and even used his powers to volley it in the air a few times. He seemed completely oblivious to the dowel's purpose, yet was enamored with its green color. The more he played around with it, the more reckless he became until one final *whack*. The totem flew towards a strange machine, about to land right in its center. Gammalth teleported after it, but once he appeared in the middle of the strange machine, he disappeared along with the dowel. ~~~ (Wess's part coming soon...like in 20 minutes or so)
